oh god oh man oh god oh man it's been another year already?!?! time flies when you're having fun, i guess...

for the uninitiated, on december 6th, 2020, i published my first ever full start to finish track to youtube. it's not good, but it is the first, and every year since i've done a little writeup to act as a celebration of my progress and recap of what i've done. i'm also actually publishing it on time this year, which i haven't done for the past 2 out of 3 years...

this was quite a doozy of a year if i do say so myself, so let's go over some highlights.

a compost in which i can post gives my soul the most

back in november of last year, hvb on now-defunct social media site cohost.org hosted an event called compost, in which participants would take 1-2 hours during a 24 hour period to make a song based off of a particular prompt. it's not a unique concept, the 1 hour battle competition is already a well established thing in circles such as battle of the bits, but i'd never seen it before, especially not on a regular social media site. throughout 2024, 5 more compost events occurred, and i participated in every single one of them. not only was it just fun to challenge myself in that way, it also brought a lot of musicians on cohost out of the woodwork that i never even realized were there. turns out it's a lot easier to find a community of people who make music when the website lets you upload audio files. ahem twitter ahem bluesky ahem basically everyone except tumblr i guess and also newgrounds but this site isn't really social media imo

i didn't upload all of my compost entries here but i did upload the ones i was most proud of.

unfortunately, cohost is dead now. not an unexpected outcome by any means, but i think it will be a while before we see a website like that again. in any case, most of the musician people moved to a discord server, so not all was lost. even if i don't talk enough in it hehe...

also shout out to my fellow chosters that came over to newgrounds once cohost went under!! hiiii!!

some covers for the "other people's music" lovers

i made a lot of covers this year! compared to the two video game covers i've made before this year, the 5 (soon to be 6) (or 7 if you count long elevator) that i've made this year blows it out of the water. i pulled from a variety of sources, such as undertale yellow, oneshot, the velvet underground, ace attorney, ..undertale, ....undertale again technically..., and i also have another undertale yellow cover coming out on tuesday for the game's anniversary OKAY maybe it wasn't that varied. however, covers are still super fun to create, and i think i haven't appreciated just how much doing a cover of someone else's work can help build my skill in original compositions. seriously, i think doing that first cover of meltdown from undertale yellow back in february permanently and noticeably improved the quality of my work. (for reasons not least of which that it taught me of the value of... using a crash cymbal. i literally hadn't used one prior to that....)

anyway, don't be surprised if i continue to do covers of songs that i particularly enjoy. it's good fun and good practice!

a red & yellow for this mellow fellow

this is the thing that i by far want to talk about the most, but unfortunately i can't actually share anything that i've worked on for it yet. for the probably all of you that are missing context, remember in the last paragraph when i said i've covered two songs from hit fangame undertale yellow? well, i've done a bit more with regards to that game. back in april, i joined the team for a mod called undertale red & yellow, which has the end goal of bringing characters and areas from fan prequel undertale yellow into the base game of undertale. i've made about 8 tracks or so for the next update, which should hopefully be coming out pretty soon. i've gotten to meet and work with so many talented and kind people on this mod team, and it's made my year immeasurably better. i'm so excited to share what i've worked on so far, and to continue helping out with this mod for likely the next several years.

greatest hits with some reflective bits really hits

something really clicked this year for me. i feel like i'm finally making songs that people will actually go out of their way to listen to, and that might resonate with them in a unique way. i'd like to say this isn't because i got a lot of external validation this year compared to previous years, but unfortunately, that is totally the reason. i'm not terrible at keeping myself internally motivated. after all, i probably would have quit after 6 months if i wasn't doing this primarily for my own enjoyment. however, i do share it for a reason, and to have more people appreciate what i make definitely boosts my confidence a lot. as someone who has a somewhat negative tendency to always strike it out alone, meeting some new people and joining new communities this year also really helped with this.

self-reflection aside, the point is that i improved a lot this year and got more confident in my abilities. so, as a result, i'm really proud of pretty much everything that i posted this year. my favorite song that i made this year has got to be "the color of being forgotten". i don't know what possessed me to lock in and make something so emotional out of nowhere, but i think it stands the test of time even 9 months later. i think it says a lot about how far i've come this year when i can say my favorite is 9 months old, when in previous years, i generally considered anything older than 6 months to be pretty bad.

"tomorrow now!" comes in a close second because it was by far the most fun i had making a song this year. it is just pure joyful energy concentrated into a 2 minute long package. also shoutout to the meltdown cover for not only being my most polished song this year but also getting over 1,000 views here?? i didn't think that would happen unless i got frontpaged, so that was a more than welcome surprise.

conclusion to this rambly confusion

yeah, i know the header rhymes are reaching, i don't feel like putting in the extra time to be clever. anyways, that's about all i can think to write about for this year. thank you very much to all the people who have supported me in any way this year, it really does make a difference.

i missed my account anniversary last year, but not this year! kind of weird that it's only been 3 years. it's been a very very long 3 years... i plan to keep sticking around! newgrounds is one of the scant few sites that isn't completely soul crushing to post to. even if i don't get a lot of eyes on my stuff here most of the time, it's still better than soundcloud. anything is better than soundcloud.

with the release of my latest track i now have 100 entire audios on this website! that's roughly 2.86 songs per month! (of course this includes the month in which i released 33 songs which is definitely NOT an outlier tee hee)

thanks ng for being a good place to uploads my audios!!

On December 6th, 2020, I uploaded my first ever piece of music to YouTube, entitled "Jesus Pizza". I get more and more tepid about linking it every year since it sucks, but it's necessary as an introduction!! I know I'm late again this year, but I had finals to worry about, plus at this point I think it makes more sense to transition this post towards the end of the year anyway, since an end of year recap on December 6th feels kind of wrong.

Anyway, what did I do this year??

NGAP20

My first collab of the year! I teamed up with Jaksana who did a little vocal intro at the beginning of my entry, which I think added a nice touch. I'm really glad I got to contribute to such a huge celebration of the audio portal! I didn't feel that my entry was super intricate, but that doesn't really matter, it's the thought that counts! Now that I'm in the Newgrounds Audio Collab Discord, that's been opening the door to even more collaboration, though I'm still trying to get over the whole shyness thing. I never actually uploaded my part of the collab here on NG, but I did put it on my website (which is also new this year), which has songs and demos that I never uploaded here!

Beat Saber Collab

Unfortunately, this one isn't out yet, but I will give it a mention because I cooked for this one and I'm still really antsy for it to be done. I made a song that will eventually be included in a Beat Saber map pack filled with songs from other musicians here on NG, organized by sereneFalconer! The cover arts for each song are also made by NG artists, and in my case I was paired with UnsolvedCases, who was a pleasure to work with and who also cooked hard!! If all goes well, I should be able to reveal my contribution in 2024!

Sea Shanty Collab

Yeah okay this one isn't out either, but my part is done for this one too, so I still count it as this year. I made an instrumental for the upcoming Sea Shanty Collab organized by VoicesByCorey and MonkaBonka809! I did a cover of "The Last Shanty", in this case the Derina Harvey Band version. I saw this collab back when it was first proposed in like April, but I didn't feel I had time for it at that point. When it was revived a month or two ago, I listened to The Last Shanty and felt like I had to hop on, so I did! Once the whole collab comes together I think it's going to be really awesome, so stay tuned for that!

Okay that's it for the collabs, but I did pop off in general this year

Seriously I feel like my improvement this year has been monumental. Once the summer hit, something just changed, and my compositions have just been getting so much more interesting. I can't even count the amount of times I've just been working on a song and been like "holy shit I made this???" and then I physically stand up and start pacing around. In the grand scheme of things I'm still not exactly a professional, but I've really been on the up and up.

Greatest Hits

I do still have one more song that I'm working on right now, but I still don't think it will trump Wishing Star as my personal favorite song of the year, mostly for personal reasons. I made Wishing Star right as I was leaving for college, and that period of time combined with the instrumentation and composition of the song made it so that it has a strong emotional impact for me. Production-wise, it's probably not even the best song I made this summer, but production < feels.

Another one I really liked this year was Make It Last Forever, which was the first song in my streak that's been lasting throughout the latter half of this year. It was the first song where I really felt that little bit of extra spice was added, and it definitely shows.

Last one I'll mention here is 555, which I really really enjoyed making. The sampling of a voicemail is radically different, but it was fun. It was probably the most fun I had working on any song this year, just because it's infectiously bouncy. It also blew up over on cohost.org, which is the website that it was originally made for in the first place, which I'm still riding the high of over 2 months later. It really accented how much I've improved lately.

What next?

No idea! Only time will tell. I'm sure I will do more collab stuff next year, and hopefully garner the cajones to go even more outside my comfort zone. Until then, I hope you all have a very good holiday season!! Thank you to everyone who supported me and who I collaborated with this year, 2023 has been the best year of my life so far and pretty much everyone I've met this year on NG and Cohost has contributed to that.

iu_1123841_8720543.webpi had a sort of pseudo-goal for myself to see if i could get frontpaged without making a single purchase towards music stuff but with my entry for the sea shanty collab, being limited to 8 tracks just isn't viable. hopefully this will open the floodgates for some more interesting stuff coming from me though!
